Microsoft has added another piece to the Windows 365 Developer Configuration puzzle. As of the week of August 24, 2026, the Windows 11 Enterprise Developer Configuration gallery image now includes Microsoft 365 Apps in Public Preview. This means new Cloud PCs provisioned with this image will come with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and the rest of the M365 app suite preinstalled — right alongside the developer tools that were already there.

If this sounds familiar, it’s because this is the third incremental update to the Developer Configuration image since its debut at Microsoft Build 2026 in June. Let’s look at what’s changed, why it matters, and what IT teams need to do.


The Developer Configuration Image: A Quick Recap

The Developer Configuration image was announced at Build 2026 as a public preview. It’s a specialized Windows 11 Enterprise gallery image for Windows 365 Cloud PCs that comes preconfigured with the tools developers actually use:

  • Visual Studio Code (with extensions for PowerShell, Python, WSL, GitHub, and Edge DevTools)
  • Git and GitHub CLI
  • GitHub Copilot CLI (with Work IQ and Windows Dev Skills)
  • Python, Node.js, npm, nvm
  • PowerShell 7
  • .NET Runtime and SDK
  • Azure CLI
  • Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) with Ubuntu
  • Oh My Posh, UV tools, WinApp CLI, PowerToys
  • Intelligent Terminal and Coreutils (added August 10, 2026)

The image also applies developer-optimized Windows settings: file extensions visible, hidden files shown, Git integration in File Explorer, and a Start menu “Developer Tools” category.

Available for Windows 365 Enterprise and Windows 365 Flex Dedicated mode, the image is designed to get developers from zero to coding in minutes.


What’s New: M365 Apps Added to the Image

The latest update adds Microsoft 365 Apps to the preconfigured image. This includes the core Office suite:

  • Word — document creation and editing
  • Excel — spreadsheets and data analysis
  • PowerPoint — presentations
  • Outlook — email and calendar
  • OneNote — note-taking
  • Access and Publisher (where applicable based on licensing)

Previously, developers provisioning a Cloud PC with the Developer Configuration image would get a rich coding environment but would need to manually install Office apps if they needed them for documentation, spreadsheets, or email. Now, both worlds — development and productivity — come together in a single image.


Why This Matters

For Developers

Developers don’t just code. They write documentation, review spreadsheets, draft emails, create presentations, and collaborate through Outlook. Having M365 Apps preinstalled means:

  • No manual Office installation after first sign-in — it’s just there
  • Consistent Office configuration across all developer Cloud PCs
  • Ready-to-work from minute one — whether that work is coding in VS Code or writing a spec in Word
  • Seamless context switching between development and productivity tasks without leaving the Cloud PC

For IT Admins

  • Reduced provisioning complexity — no need for custom scripts or packaging to deploy Office apps to developer Cloud PCs
  • Standardized environment — every developer Cloud PC has the same baseline, reducing support tickets and configuration drift
  • Simplified image management — one image covers both dev tools and productivity apps, reducing the need for multiple custom images
  • Licensing consideration — M365 Apps requires appropriate Microsoft 365 licensing (E3/E5/Business Premium or standalone M365 Apps for Enterprise). Make sure your Cloud PC users have the right licenses

For the Organization

This update reflects Microsoft’s ongoing investment in making Windows 365 a complete platform — not just for office workers, but for developers too. The Developer Configuration image has evolved rapidly since June:

  1. Build 2026 (June): Launch with core dev tools
  2. August 10: Intelligent Terminal + Coreutils added
  3. August 24: M365 Apps added

This trajectory suggests Microsoft is committed to making the Developer Configuration image the go-to choice for organizations provisioning developer Cloud PCs.


Requirements and Limitations

  • Available for: Windows 365 Enterprise and Windows 365 Flex Dedicated mode
  • Not supported on: 2 vCPU Cloud PCs and GPU-enabled Cloud PCs (for the Developer Configuration image)
  • Status: Public Preview
  • Reprovisioning required: Existing Cloud PCs won’t automatically get the updated image — you’ll need to reprovision or create new Cloud PCs
  • Licensing: Microsoft 365 Apps requires appropriate M365 licensing (Microsoft 365 E3/E5, Business Premium, or M365 Apps for Enterprise)

What IT Admins Should Do

  1. Check your current Developer Configuration image usage — in the Microsoft Intune admin center, go to Provision Cloud PCs > Provisioning policies and check which gallery image is selected. If you’re using the Developer Configuration image, new provisions will automatically include M365 Apps.

  2. Verify licensing — ensure users with Developer Configuration Cloud PCs have the appropriate Microsoft 365 licenses that include M365 Apps entitlement. Without the right license, the Office apps may not activate properly.

  3. Plan for reprovisioning — if you want existing developer Cloud PCs to get the updated image with M365 Apps, you’ll need to reprovision them. Communicate this to affected users so they can save their work to OneDrive or SharePoint before reprovisioning.

  4. Update developer documentation — let your dev teams know that new Cloud PCs provisioned with the Developer Configuration image now include the full M365 app suite. They no longer need to manually install Office apps.

  5. Consider image size implications — adding M365 Apps will increase the image footprint. Monitor provisioning times and storage usage to ensure the larger image doesn’t cause issues in your environment.


The Bigger Picture

The Developer Configuration image for Windows 365 is becoming a genuinely compelling option for organizations that need to provision developer Cloud PCs at scale. What started as a dev-tools-only image at Build 2026 has evolved in just under three months into a comprehensive “ready-to-work” environment that covers both sides of a developer’s daily workflow — coding and productivity.

The addition of M365 Apps also aligns with Microsoft’s broader vision for Windows 365 as a platform that serves all types of workers. Developer Cloud PCs no longer feel like a stripped-down coding environment that’s missing basic productivity tools. They’re now complete workstations in the cloud.

For organizations already using the Developer Configuration image, this is a welcome upgrade. For those evaluating it, the increasingly rich preconfigured toolset makes it a stronger choice — especially for distributed teams where consistent, ready-to-go environments reduce onboarding friction and support overhead.
