Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid has reached general availability, and it fundamentally changes the migration math for organizations sitting on legacy VDI and RDS infrastructure. If you’ve been waiting for a credible path to modernize desktop virtualization without abandoning your existing datacenter investments, this is the announcement you’ve been waiting for.

What AVD Hybrid Actually Delivers

The core proposition is straightforward: your session hosts run in your datacenter, but the control plane lives in Azure. Azure Arc bridges the two worlds, and the AVD Arc extension handles the heavy lifting of installing components and registering machines with a host pool.

Here’s what the architecture looks like in practice:

  1. Session hosts run in your datacenter on your hypervisor of choice
  2. Azure Arc connects those machines to Azure
  3. The AVD Hybrid extension configures Arc-enabled VMs as AVD session hosts
  4. The AVD cloud service handles session brokering and user connectivity
  5. Windows App gives users the same experience regardless of where the session host lives
  6. All communication is outbound over HTTPS — no inbound connectivity required

The Migration Story: From Legacy VDI to AVD to Windows 365

Microsoft is positioning AVD Hybrid as part of a phased modernization journey, not a destination. The trajectory looks like this:

  1. Today: Run session hosts on-prem with AVD Hybrid while keeping the cloud control plane
  2. Transition: Gradually move workloads to Azure-native AVD as hardware cycles come up
  3. End state: Adopt Windows 365 for a fully cloud-delivered experience

Windows 365 Reserve plays a specific role here. When on-premises environments go down — whether from outages, ransomware, or planned maintenance — Reserve provides a temporary, preconfigured Cloud PC so users stay productive. It’s business continuity insurance for the hybrid era.

Partner Ecosystem: Filling the Management Gaps

AVD Hybrid doesn’t include VM provisioning or power management for on-prem session hosts — that’s by design. Microsoft is leaning on partners to fill those gaps:

  • Login VSI (Hydra): Provides a consistent management layer across cloud and on-prem AVD deployments. Hydra reached GA alongside AVD Hybrid, offering unified orchestration regardless of where session hosts run.
  • Nerdio: Brings desktop orchestration, automation, visibility, and operational controls. For organizations already using Nerdio Manager for cloud AVD, extending to hybrid is a natural extension.
  • Nutanix: Combines the AVD modern desktop control plane with Nutanix AHV’s performance, compliance, and operational control. Nutanix customers can adopt AVD without leaving their preferred infrastructure.

Timeline: From Preview to GA

AVD Hybrid moved through three distinct phases:

All of these steps can be completed directly from the Azure portal. The entire onboarding flow is designed to be executable by an IT admin with basic Azure and hypervisor knowledge.
